Here we have yet another stupid spammer that has a bunch of copy cat sites which he posts the same garbage to.
And because the sites are junk and have 0 traffic, he then spams their links all over the place trying to get traffic. Only problem is, the dumb ass now has all his sites listed in anti-spam databases. Plus.. as a side effect of his brilliant spamming, many of his sites are now suspended.
Not to mention, his server, jacohost.com, has also been successfully hacked and defaced by hackers. Now that boys and girls is poetic justice.
But just to add a little salt to the wond, lets list a few of his sites. That way if someone happens to see any of them in a SEO report, they’ll know they are using an Unethical SEO Service.

From the Wall Street Journal..

CloudFlare Inc. of San Francisco earned top honors in this category with a service that helps secure and speed up the performance of websites.

CloudFlare sits between a website’s hosting service and a visitor’s computer, sending traffic through its own network of data centers around the globe. Its security feature automatically detects threats from excessive spam, surveillance from malicious programs known as “bots” and denial-of-service attacks; all sites that use CloudFlare are then protected if the threat reappears.

Threat-detection systems can slow down Internet page loading because they add an extra layer between a website and its visitors. CloudFlare’s developers, however, refined the code running its systems so that most pages load as much as 40% faster.

The LulzSec hacker group, which used CloudFlare’s service to protect a website where it boasted of its exploits, praised CloudFlare after the service successfully fended off a barrage of attacks designed to bring down the site.

If you are a CloudFlare customer or thinking about using their service, that last paragraph should raise a very serious question of trust!

Can you trust a company that willingly, and is proud of, providing its service to hackers, spammers, scammers and other cyber criminals?
Not to mention a company that goes to great lengths to justify its support of people that scam and steal from innocent folks. They constantly search the net for negative posts, comments and articles and copy and paste the same old “we’re not the internet police” response. Granted, they are not.
But, any ethical company will stop providing services to the bad guys as soon as they find out. Not boast about it all over the place.

So, will CloudFlare really protect your data? Or will they siphon off tidbits, personal info, credit card numbers, email addresses etc.. here and there to feed to the cyber criminals?
Maybe.. maybe not.
But remember, the people at CloudFlare are no dummies. They wouldn’t just snatch your entire customer/member database. They’d just grab a few here and there. That way it would be almost impossible to figure out where the stolen data came from.

In closing, let me ask you one question…
Are you willing to trust a cyber criminal loving company with your data?

Spammers are now setting up internal sites that they spam their customers links to. They do this in hopes of not being reported to anti-spam databases, or getting their sites blacklisted.
What they do is register a large amount of domain names then setup blogs, article sites, directorys ect. on them then blast them with their links and their customers links.
But the problem is, these sites have no traffic and a page rank of zero. So in order in get these sites ranked in Google, they spam the crap out of other sites hoping to get enough backinks for Google to notice them.

Today we have a really, and I mean REALLY stupid spammer doing just that.
Many of this idiots websites have already been suspended!

CloudFlare, who is owned by the same folks at Project Honey Pot, acts like a CDN plus security suite for websites.

CloudFlare protects and accelerates any website online. Once your website is a part of the CloudFlare community, its web traffic is routed through our intelligent global network. We automatically optimize the delivery of your web pages so your visitors get the fastest page load times and best performance. We also block threats and limit abusive bots and crawlers from wasting your bandwidth and server resources. The result: CloudFlare-powered websites see a significant improvement in performance and a decrease in spam and other attacks.

Actually, it is a very good service. I was an early beta tester and was quit impressed with the service. Back then, their attitude was “Don’t just track online bad guys, stop them“. But once the beta testing was over and they went live, that attitude took a drastic turn…. for the worse! Now they are tickled pink to provide a “Safe Haven” for the bad guys. And just how bad are these “bad guys”? Try lulzsecurity.com, a known hackers site! And what does CloudFlare have to say about that?

Soon after LulzSec rose in prominence, several other groups launched significant DDoS attacks to knock them offline. CloudFlare mitigated those attacks.
Given the choice, I may not have picked Public Enemy Number One as the poster child for CloudFlare’s service. It does, however, remind me of the old Range Rover commercial talking about the great London bank heist. “The robbers thought of everything,” the commercial concluded. “That’s why, for their getaway vehicle, they chose a Range Rover.”

Matthew Prince has found that providing a safe haven to the bad guys is where the money is at. Because of the publicity of the LulzSec incident, they managed to raise 20 Million dollars in funding. Which came from New Enterprise Associates, Venrock and Pelion Venture Partners.

The other interesting thing is, many of the domains using CF are also running xrumer, senuke and other spamming software from the same domains. Which means, while your website is being spammed to hell and back, CF is is providing a comfy security blanket for them. Now that folks, is one hell of a Business Plan!

Below is a growing list of known spammers/hackers websites that are using CloudFlare.
Note: will be adding more shortly. Still sorting through the thousands of spammers domains.

An AutoBot spam trap can take the form of a blog, forum, guest book or even what looks like a static webpage. Their sole task is to trap and report spammers to anti-spam databases. They do their job automatically (hence the “Auto” part of the name) and in real time. Which makes the anti-spam mods/plugins that use the same databases the traps report to, so much more effective.

It is impossible to know IF the site you’re visiting is an AutoBot trap or just a normal website. Take this site for example. Is it an AutoBot trap?
But don’t worry! Innocent visitors are very well protected from accidentally being reported.

The biggest problem today is finding an honest, play by the rules, Search Engine Optimization company. With all the automated software that is designed to spam a websites URL to the top of search listing, more and more scam SEO websites are popping up everywhere. And the really bad news, if you happen to do business with one of there spammers, your websites’ URL will most likely end up in an anti-spam database. Which in the long run, will hurt your search engine listings, not to mention, your website reputation. But the good news is, that once you know what to look out for, they are very easy to spot.

The first step in spotting unethical SEO services, is by the services they offer. Which is a dead give-a-way.

1: Backlinks from thousands of websites.
This is a very popular offering among spammers. Because they will use software to spam blogs, guest books, forums etc. Some will blatantly spam your website URL, while others will setup “filter” pages or use double redirect URLs. They do this, so the traffic you see in your traffic logs will “look” like it’s coming from a legitimate website. The backlinks are never of any quality and can get your site sandboxed or worse black listed.

2: Blog Commenting.
Although this sounds like a different service, it’s exactly the same a backlink package. The only difference is, instead of spamming every type of website they can, they spam thousands of blogs. The comments they leave will have nothing to do with what is posted. Most of the time, the comment will be in the form of a complement, like how great a blog it is or how wonderful the post is. They will use your targeted keyword as the username and a filter page or your website URL for the website field.

3: Guaranteed #1 listing.
If you see a site claiming this, run! They will get your site listed at the top of search results. But, it wont last long and with thousands of spam traps out there, your site will also be listed in anti-spam databases.

4: Article submission to hundreds of sites.
There are people out there who write articles for a living and are very good it. Spammers are not among those. Most will never write an article, they prefer to steal them. By using an article scraper to collect a few hundred articles from sites like ezinearticles, and then use software to spin the article to look like a different one. The software will churn out hundreds or thousands of these “unique” articles. They will then plugin them into an article submission software and blast away. The submission software will automatically join, verify the email, fill out the profile and post the article.

In closing, let me leave you with this…
Getting on the first page of search results, isn’t hard. There is no secret or special trick. All it takes is having unique content that is useful to the end user. If you have that, not only will you rank well in the search results, but the visitors to your site will find it useful and be happy to come back.

Comment spam can and will trash your blog in short order. So understanding what it is, how it works and how to stop it fast can save you hours, or even days of cleaning up the mess.

Simply put, it’s comments spammers post on your blog, for the sole purpose of gaining a back link to their money-maker site. The more back links they have, the higher the Page Ranking they will have. Which in turn brings more traffic and potential customers.

Although this may sound innocent enough, it is far from it! Some of the links that spammers post lead to scams, viruses, and Trojan laden websites. And that’s the nicer stuff. You really don’t want to see the nastier ones.

Spammers never actually see your blog. They use software that will take a list of blog URLs, which is usually in the thousands, and start posting their ads. The software does not show your blog like a browser, thus they never see it. It also will post to several hundred blogs a minute. On just one of my spam traps, I’ve seen as many as 8 posts a second. So as you can imagine, a single spammer can really mess up your blog in short order.

How do I identify Comment Spam?

Visually identifying spam in your blogs comment list is a bit tricky at first. But once you know what to look for, it becomes much easier, and you will be able to pick it out almost instantly.

There are 3 basic types.

Type 1: The author will post a comment and leave only the author URL. (98% of the time the comment is about how great your site or writing is)

Type 2: These will have an author URL plus a couple more links in the body of the comment. (generally, random text or keywords with links)

Type 3: These are blatant spammers with a boat load of links in the comment body. (These will be flagged by your blog as spam right off the bat and will never be posted publicly)

Almost all comment spam will have one thing in common. The user name, which will be the keywords they are trying to get a higher ranking for. Personally, I have never seen a real person use “Sulfur for Acne” as their username. Now there are some spammers that will use a person’s name, well, at least they make an attempt at it.

For the ones that are not obvious spam, you will need to manually check them to see if they are spammers. To do this, you can use a tool that will cross check several anti-spam databases. One very powerful, and free tool is Forum Spam List Checker.

I hope I’ve given you a little better understanding of what comment spam is and how to spot it. One little tip before I let you go. If you have a WordPress blog, you can stop spammers by installing the plugin Stop Spammer Registrations. It works very well!

So you’re looking to save some money by buying prescription drugs online. Well good for you. But, there is a VERY high possibility that not only will you never receive your order, but you may also have your credit card maxed out in short order.

Since I would hate to see you get ripped off, lets see if we can arm you with a bit of info to help you spot the fake pharmaceutical sites.

Scammers can be slightly cleaver. VERY slightly! When visiting one of these fake pharmaceutical sites, at first glance it looks legit. But, if you take 10 seconds to really look at the page, you’ll see very quickly that it’s nothing more than a scam.

So just how can you tell if it’s fake? Well, lets take a look at one and see what clues we can find.

Red Flag #1 The URL:

If the website has a name like “We are Drugs” and the URL is something like petes cookie shop.com, there is a problem. A legitimate pharmaceutical website will have an address that is very close, or exactly the same as their business name.

Red Flag #2 The Security Badge:

Pharmaceutical sites will display some type of “Security Badge”. Like GeoTrust or McAfee Secure. These badges should be clickable and take you to their security certificate. Again, look at the URL. It should be the URL of the security company and not the address of the pharmaceutical site you’re on. It should also be a secure URL. Meaning it will have https and not http.

Red Flag #3 The menu:

Take a look at the sites menu. The links in the menu, in a lot of cases, will lead nowhere, or take you to the top of the page. This is because they don’t take the time to completely setup the site, they know the hosting provider will take down the site when the complaints start rolling in. Plus, one scammer may have as many as 30 sites setup.

Red Flag #4 The Contact Info:

One of the first things you want to do, is to take a peek at their About Us or Contact page. On either page you should find a physical address along with a phone number. To tell instantly if it’s fake, try to highlight the address. If it’s an image and not text, run! It is very common for scammers to use an image for the contact information, because the script will change the image every few days. And it also makes it impossible to copy and paste the information. Which is exactly what you want to do next.

Take the address and put it in Google maps. It should return results that match what the website says. The best one so far, was located at a scrap metal yard.

Red Flag #5 Payment Options:

Legitimate pharmaceutical websites will never, ever offer Western U. as a form of payment. If you see this, run as fast as you can, because I will guarantee you it is a scam. Now some fake sites will hide the payment options until you’ve placed items in the shopping cart and filled out your shipping address. They do this so even if you don’t complete the order, they at least have your email, name, address and phone number. Which they can then sell to other scammers. So if you have any doubt about the legitimacy of the site, do not use you real personal information.

That is just 5 of the many red flags that should alert you to a site being fake. There are many more, like phone numbers, shipping times, return policies, testimonials etc. But those 5 should give you a pretty good start to spotting and avoiding fake pharmaceutical websites.

A lot of people, be it forum or blog owners or even anti-spam mod authors don’t really understand the importance of reporting spammers to the anti-spam databases. Owners usually find out the hard way what comment spam is, after their forum/blog is plastered with porn and fake pharmaceutical ads. And by then, all they want is some way to make it stop. Which is what the anti-spam mod authors do very well. They unselfishly donate their time and skills to write the mods and plugins, plus spending countless hours supporting the folks that are using them.

It seems like once an owner has successfully stopped the spammers, they just carry on enjoying their nice clean site, and never think twice about why their new mods work so well. Some of the authors are the same way, they’ve written a mod that checks and stops the spammers, goal achieved. But as many are starting to realize, blocking them is only half the battle.

Reporting spammers is just as, if not more, important as blocking them. You see, without the folks that are silently feeding the anti-spam databases… those mods and plugins would be useless. Having very little or outdated data is useless, especially when spammers can change IP’s, Usernames, and email addresses with almost every post. Even data that is 1 hour old… is almost to old. Because in one hour, a spammer can blast several thousand different sites, using hundreds of IP, email and username combinations.

Let me clarify something. I’m not saying data that is 1 hour old is useless. On the contrary, it is very useful, if, it is submitted to anti-spam databases. Data that is to old, would be in the range of 48 hours or older. And even if your spammer is in the database, report them anyway. This keeps the “Last Seen” times up to date.

Anyway, I think you can see why it’s important to report the little buggers. But what if the anti-spam mod/plugin you’re using doesn’t have a “Report” feature? In cases like this, you can do two things.
1: Politely (remember they’re doing this for free) ask the author if they could add the report feature.
2: While waiting, you can manually report them at the anti-spam websites or use a tool like Gunners Forum Spam List Checker.

Reporting in a timely manner.
Here is where some folks really miss the boat. I’ve seen some wait until a bot has hit their site 3 or more times before reporting it. The old “3 strikes and you’re out” rule. The problem with this is, while you’re waiting for a spam bot to hit your site for the 3rd or so time, they have already blasted thousands of other sites.

Let me give you a very simple example..
Spammer X loads up his ads, proxy list, and site list containing 10 thousand urls to blast. These urls are of sites that only check and don’t report. When he fires off his spam blasting session, the bot hits your site the first time, you do nothing. Once the software has ran though the list, it starts over, hitting your site again, again you wait. At this point the bot has blasted 20 thousand ads. By the time it comes around the 3rd time… it’s blasted 30 thousand ads on on 10k different sites.
So, as you can see, the hesitation in reporting has left a boat load of admins to clean up the garbage, check his info, add him to their ban lists..etc…

One more thing!
The folks writing the mods/plugins and the ones running most anti-spam databases are doing so out of the kindness of their hearts, and are spending their own money. So if you like your site being spam free, please show your gratitude by making a donation. You would be surprised just how much it means to them. Plus… lets be honest. They are doing an awesome job!!

Here’s my favorites!
Anti-spam databases…

That is bloody Awesome!! Two thumbs up for the folks at Microsoft!
But, lets not celebrate to much. You see even thought MS was able to take down the botnet, they can’t keep spammers from plastering their OWN forum. Rather ironic isn’t it? Personally… I find it funnier than hell!

Reporting comment spammers is always fun. Well, for me that is. You on the other hand might find it to be an annoying and tedious task. Not to mention one that is never ending. Stopping spammers really is easy, but that is for another article. Today, I want to take a little time and talk about a vital step most blog and forum owners are completely missing. That step is “Reporting” the spammers.

If it comes as a shock that you can report spammers that hit your blog or forum, don’t worry, you’re not alone. Even some of the authors of anti-spam mods never even thought of adding a report feature to their mods. Reporting the little buggers is actually the most important step in battling spam. Because every time you submit a report, you are not only blocking them from your site, but hundreds of thousands of other sites!

Some forum and blog owners will just delete and or ban the spammers and never report them because they are not sure “if” they should. Well, take it from someone who has reported over 200K spammers, if they spam your site, report them. Even if they appear in the anti-spam services database fifty blue million times. This keeps the “Last Seen” records up to date. If they do not show up, but have spammed your site, it is very important that you submit them.

I think you now see the importance of reporting comment spammers. So lets get to the “Easy as 1-2-3″ part!
Step 1: Are they really a spammer?
Some spammers are blatantly obvious, while others may be harder to spot. It’s the “harder to spot” ones we need to investigate. Before now, most used Google and an IP Lookup service for more information. The problem with this method is, the results are old. It takes a few days or even weeks before a spammers info will show up in search engines. What you want is information that is seconds old, not days.
Now, you can get up to the second information on spammers and report them in less than 5 seconds. The owner of gunnerinc.com has written an awesome program that will search 15 different anti-spam databases at once. Plus submit to two of the most popular ones. The program, Forum Spam List Checker, (FSLC for short) is free, very simple to use and very fast.

Forum Spam List Checker In Action!

Step 2: Reporting!
You’ve checked the suspect and your suspicions were correct. Now it’s time to submit the spammers info. If you’re using FSLC, the process takes one click of the submit button and about a half a second. I’m not joking about the half second!
When you submit a spammer, you need 3 pieces of information. The spammers IP address, email and username. This is why it is very important not to allow “Guests” to post or leave comments.

Step 3: Banning or Blocking!
This part is really dependent on what anti-spam mods you have installed. In the case of a new spam bot for example, the anti-spam mod will block the spammer once you’ve reported them.
Some people like to crate a new ban rule, which can have the down side of a ban log flooded with rejected attempts. Others like to add the IP address to their htaccess file. Which is good in the fact that the spammer can no longer access anything on your site. But at the same time is really not very good because 1: the file can become very large which will slow your site down, and 2: spammers change IP addresses frequently, thus the large htaccess file.
So as a general rule… report them and let your anti-spam protection take care of the blocking.

Woo Hoo!
One simple plugin was all it took to block the dirtbag comment spammers.

That’s no joke! I deactivated Akismet, which wasn’t doing a very good job, installed the plugin Stop Spammer Registrations Plugin and activated it. Instantly the spammer comments and registrations stopped. Which at the time, this blog was receiving over 800 spam comments an hour.
Keith P. Graham over at Blogseye.com has done a wonderful job coding the plugin.

The plugin validates Email, IP and User name against the StopForumSpam.com db. It denies login attempts, such as spammers trying to guess passwords or spammers trying to create login ids. It also stops spammers who try to add comments with a spammer email or IP addresses.

Of course, this is not an end all be all, but it’s sure darn close to the ultimate blog anti-spam solution!
